He was born in the Italian region of Tuscany and was raised to the chair of Peter in 440. He exercised his office as a true shepherd and father of souls.
He worked arduously for the integrity of the faith, defending the unity of the Church with great effort. He wrote against the heresies of Nestorianism, Monophysitism, Manichaeism and Pelagianism. He was able to prevent or lessen the invasions and attacks of the barbarians, all of which rightly earned him the title "Great".
He died in the year 461.
