Saints and Theology of the Heart - St. Matthias

Apostle

Feast: May 14

He followed Jesus “beginning with the baptism of John until the time that he was taken up from us”.  For this reason, when Judas Iscariot had deserted them and there wa a need to complete the number of the 12 apostles, Peter proposed that he be joined to the apostolic group and “become with us a witness to the resurrection” (Acts 1:15-26).
Matthias, after Easter, was chosen in place of the traitor.  In the Church of Jerusalem two were presented to the community, “Joseph called Barsabbas, who was known as Justus, and Mattias”(Acts 1:23), and then they were chosen by lot after praying for the Lord to show them which it should be. In this was , “he was counted with the eleven apostles”(Acts 1:26).

We do not know anything more of him, except that he was a witness to the public life of Jesus.  (Cf. Acts 1, 21-22), remaining faithful until the end.

"We draw from this a final lesson: while there is no lack of unworthy and traitorous Christians in the Church, it is up to each of us to counterbalance the evil done by them with our clear witness to Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.” -Benedict XVI, October 18, 2006

His relics are in Trier, Germany, the city of which he is patron
