Saints and Theology of the Heart - St. Nicholas von Flue

Father of Switzerland

Feast: March 21

Nicholas was born on March 21st, 1417. He grew up farming with his father and later he was a commander in the military. He convinced the compatriots to show kindness towards a convent of Religious. After his time in the war, he married Dorothy Wiss and they had ten children. He led a contemplative life of prayer and he strictly fasted.

After being married for twenty years, he felt called to become a hermit. Even though his wife just had their tenth child, she agreed that this is where he should go. His neighbors and older children were appalled and thought he was being immoral and irresponsible. After he left, he was no longer able to eat or drink anything.

During his time in hermitage, only a few miles from his home, he never had a desire to return to his former life. When people began to observe that his fast and vocation was genuine, people began to seek him for spiritual guidance and came on pilgrimage to visit him. He died on his seventieth birthday and his wife and children attended his funeral.
